Background: Parathyroid tissue demonstrates autofluorescence: the appearance of a bright white
area when imaged with a near-infrared camera, without the need for contrast medium.
This has been shown to distinguish parathyroid from thyroid tissue, however, its clinical
value has not been established. Inadvertent parathyroidectomy (IP) is associated with
temporary and permanent hypoparathyroidism after thyroidectomy. We present preliminary
data on whether the use of near-infrared fluoroscopy (NIF) in thyroidectomy could
reduce the incidence of IP.
