Introduction: The British Thyroid Association (BTA) Guidelines for the Management of Thyroid Cancer
regard ultrasound as a sensitive examination that can be specific for the diagnosis
of thyroid cancer. The guidelines recommend the ultrasound classification of thyroid
nodules (U) be used in combination, where necessary, with fine needle aspiration cytology
(FNAC) reported to The Royal College of Pathologists’ numerical category (Thy), to
assess the risk of malignancy.
