Sequence of scan and type of operator affects the sensitivity of ultrasound for the localisation of parathyroid adenomas

Aims: The role of dual imaging in the pre-op localisation of parathyroid adenomas is well established. Factors known to affect the sensitivity of ultrasound include the location of the gland, operator and the size of the gland. However, previous studies have not investigated whether the sequence of the ultrasound scan i.e performed before or after sestamibi scan or the type of operator (sonographer vs. radiologist) affects the sensitivity. The aim of this study is to determine whether these factors significantly affect its sensitivity.
